Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is not what you think.

When you hear the word hypnosis, what comes to mind? If you’re like many people, the word may conjure up images of a stage performer who brings about a hypnotic state, making you cluck like a chicken.

Hypnosis is a heightened state of awareness where you can learn and make changes more quickly than with traditional forms of therapy. We have all experienced this state of awareness before in our everyday lives, but we don’t call it hypnosis.

Hypnosis creates a natural state of awareness.

It is the familiar state that we move in and out of all day long. For instance, sometimes we go into this state when we’re driving, watching TV, listening to music, or working on a project about which we’re passionate.

Examples of this natural hypnotic state would be when you are doing a mundane task, such as washing the dishes, while thinking about something else to the degree that you can’t remember performing the task.

Many people experience this state when they are driving and have reached their destination but do not recall or remember how they got there.

During these naturally hypnotic states, your subconscious mind takes over.

Hypnosis helps access your subconscious mind.

Hypnosis works by using this natural state of the mind to access the subconscious mind. 90% of your thoughts, patterns, beliefs, and behaviors come from deep within the subconscious mind where it is extremely beneficial in reversing negative beliefs resolving internal conflicts, fears, and phobias.

Hypnotherapy allows you to get in touch with your core issues more rapidly than conventional talk therapy because we go directly to the source: the subconscious part of the mind, allowing you to reframe the past, so you can move forward in new positive ways.

To dispel myths and misconceptions, here are some truths about the process of hypnotherapy.

In hypnotherapy, you are in control.

Many people are suspicious of the hypnotic process. Often their only exposure to information about hypnosis is through the movies or by stage performances.

No, you will not cluck like a duck or do other embarrassing things. A clinical hypnotherapist would never have you do that.

Our therapists work with you to help you heal and understand yourself and your life situations.

Throughout the process, you are in full control.

Anyone can be hypnotized.

Hypnotherapy is not for only gullible, uneducated, or less intelligent people.

To the contrary, people who are intelligent, able to concentrate, and have a strong sense of creativity are hypnotizable. If you are resistant to hypnosis, you will not benefit from the experience.

To be hypnotized you must be a willing, active participant. The best outcome is when the therapist and the client work together.

Hypnotherapy enhances mental strength.

There is no evidence to support the idea that hypnosis weakens the mind or for that matter makes you more susceptible to suggestions.

Hypnosis helps a person develop a stronger mind and gain greater control over both their mind and body.

Under hypnosis, you are not receptive to suggestions that contradict your values or morals.

Under hypnosis, you know exactly where you are all the time.

While being hypnotized, you are not trapped in a state from which you might not wake up.

To the contrary, you can change your sitting position, scratch yourself, sneeze, or cough. You also can hear sounds around you, such as the phone ringing. Everyone comes out of a hypnotic state.

At Wisdom of the Aged, we encourage you to actively participate in your hypnotherapy session by engaging in conversation with our therapist when necessary.

If you become so relaxed that you fall asleep, you will not be in a hypnotic state when you wake up.

Hypnotherapy is scientifically based.

Hypnotherapists do not have supernatural powers or practice black magic.

A hypnotherapist is someone who has been trained and practiced in the science of hypnosis.

In fact, hypnosis is a natural state of the human mind that is neither created nor uncreated by the hypnotist.

Hypnotism can only work with absolute co-operation between hypnotist and subject.

Effectiveness depends on the individual.

Hypnosis does not create miracles. While hypnosis is a relatively quick method of making permanent improvements, there is no such thing as a one-time “Hypno-Miracle!”

Every individual makes progress at his or her own rate.

Hearing or not hearing the therapist are not prerequisites. You can hear the therapist and still be hypnotized.

Each person has a unique experience of hypnosis. Some people consciously hear the hypnotist, whereas others do not.

This has no bearing on the success of the session. It is usually down to either allowing your mind to drift away or choosing to listen carefully to what the hypnotherapist is saying.

Some people simply cannot resist allowing their minds to drift away, as they gain so much relaxation pleasure from it.

Hypnotherapy has a proven track record.

Some might say that there is not proof that hypnotherapy works, but evidence is contrary to this belief.

Hypnotherapy’s effectiveness has been proven again and again by a variety of medical and scientific organizations – including the American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, British Medical Association, and British Psychological Society.

All these organizations have independently endorsed hypnotherapy as a valid form of treatment.
